Rites of Passage Make Life Interesting and Enjoyable

When I was growing up in the 50’s and 60’s there were wonderful milestones in life that we kids were itching to get to.  First there was 13.  To be a teenager was the first sign of being a cool kid and of being grown up (which was actually a goal!).  Next came 16 when the ever-so-desirable driver’s license was available.  Of course, having your own car was a plus, but in the 60’s that wasn’t always economically possible for all kids.

Having your driver’s license was a sign that you had arrived.  You were responsible…to some extent.  I grew up in a largely agricultural area and many kids my age had already driven ranch and farm vehicles and garnered the trust of their parents to have a license.  My Dad worked at a dynamite factory and we lived in a company town, so I was learning to drive much earlier than many kids today.

The last two rites of passage to be attained were the ages 18 and 21.  Eighteen brought mixed emotions for boys, yes, you could then (back in the 60’s) go to 3.2 beer establishments to dance, meet girls and look cool.  You could also go to college, get a job, an apartment and be “on your own”.  The downside was we were required to register for the draft, and the war in Viet Nam was looming on the horizon.  Twenty-one was desirable because you could go to grown-up nightclubs to party and meet girls.

You’ve probably picked up on a couple of central themes here: 1) girls, 2) getting out on your own and being a grown-up kid.  Twenty-one was the ultimate age because you were viewed as an adult.  Being an adult meant you had power to take charge of your life, move into your own apartment or rent a house.  If you were thinking seriously about your life you were in college bettering yourself and improving your chances for good employment when you graduated.

The sixties were a time of transition and many new things appeared, one of them being the attitude of perpetual youth.  My generation was the first to reject growing up.  This in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, but it became one as time passed.  We even had a phrase: “Don’t trust anyone over thirty”.  Boy did we have a lot to learn.

Milestones in life, like rites of passage, occur to establish points of growth and maturity.  Without these the shadowy lines in the sands of time children don’t experience the changes they need to when they need to.  If you aren’t told you are now a grownup with grownup responsibilities maturity is postponed…”why not keep playing” if allowed to become the attitude.

Adults today are having a tough time on two fronts: 1) they don’t want to grow up, and 2) their kids don’t want to either.  So, who becomes the adult?  Who takes the responsibility of being mature?  Who makes the tough decisions?

If life were never-ending, this would be a different problem.  But, obviously, it isn’t and we are stuck with the need for someone to grow up and be the adult.  With aging, you find out that you should have accepted some things in life earlier; maturity and adulthood are often among them.

The “forever young” attitude is great when it comes to having a positive attitude, staying physically fit and active, but it creates lots of problems on many fronts for our country.  America is a major driving force in the world and it needs mature, responsible adults to lead and implement our policies.  Unfortunately, our supply of those citizens is diminishing as more and more of our young refuse to grow up and be adults, and as our older, mature population ages out of the working and political arenas.

Our country has reached a rite of passage and we aren’t anywhere close to being ready to grow up and take advantage of it.  The world wants a leader to make strong stands on vital issues, and we, as the most likely candidate are mired in many infantile practices such as:

·    We huge segments of our population who don’t vote.
·    They are more interested in “entertainment news” than world affairs.
·    The divorce rate has reached 50%; commitment has disappeared.
·    Large portions of the society are unwilling to better themselves and look to the         government for support.
·    We are undisciplined concerning our health, weight, fitness, finances, and education         because we will live “forever young”.

Anyone over twenty-one should re-evaluate how they view life.  They should see that it is filled with milestones, which enable us to age with responsibility and maturity making life extremely enjoyable.  

Always wanting to be young is a desirable “value based” dream; always wanting to be responsible is a “virtuous” goal.  Values are fluid and change with time, not always for the better; virtues on the other hand are concrete, time-tested beliefs, which when implemented enable you to mature properly and make great decisions in life.

Keep an attitude of looking forward to life’s milestones.  They are a sign of maturity and quality that will ultimately make your life rich with an understanding of how life works in the real world, not the fantasy world of perpetual kid-dom.

Mari Hampton

Mari Hampton (Valhovd)

Character: The voice of "Zooch"
Mari grew up in North-central North Dakota, 50 miles from the Canadian border. She is a “natural” in any type of acting environment, whether it is voice-over, on-camera or on stage. It is an ability that has been with her, since long before she started pursuing a life-long acting career. She believes that, “Unless a person utilizes their God-given talents, there will always be a part of that person that is left unfulfilled.” Ever since she was a child, she has always been very animated, yet, when required, can also give a riveting dramatic performance with great ease.
Mari was the voice of “Marilyn Monroe” in the “Hollywood Premieres” Corporate Training Video for Hunter Douglas. She also performed the voice of “Magic” a Newfoundland Puppy in the “All About Animals” radio show. She has a very broad range of Character and Animation voices, as well as the ability to perform many different “styles of reads” for various copy and text. In addition to accomplishing numerous and on-going free-lance projects, she has worked in radio broadcasting for many years, starting off as a Music Host/DJ and currently as a Writer/Producer. She has voiced and produced literally hundreds of radio commercials: Big Idea Productions – Veggie Tales, Compa - Thanksgiving Outreach, Zondervan, Bandimere 4th of July Family Festival, 9News Health Fair, and too many more to briefly mention.
Heidi Gunn

Heidi Gunn

Characters: "Hank and Daisy (Mom)"
Heidi Gunn's God-given gifts and passion for the arts has motivated her ever-growing ministry, which includes singing, modeling, acting, dancing, drawing, painting, and writing, in addition to her foreign missions work.
Heidi's ministry with her husband Randy and their band "GunnPoint" allows her to take Christ outside of the church as they reach countless people across the country at citywide outreaches and major cowboy and rodeo events. Her love for horses has helped her in the competitive sport of Cowboy Mounted Shooting, where she won a national title and gained respect and acceptance in the Cowboy world. That has helped her in her prayer to influence the lives of that community.
Heidi, Randy, and their band have been recognized for their vocal and musical talents, winning numerous entertainment awards. Heidi has begun work in the recording studio for her solo-debut CD, as well as a new CD with Randy. The couple's "A Colorado Christmas" will be released in the fall of 2009. Heidi enjoys drawing and painting; she is contributing art for the new GunnPoint calendar and a GunnPoint book, which will also include her writings.
A talented and gifted lady, Heidi is best known for her love of God and people. Her heart's desire is to take the gifts that God has given her, and use them for His glory.

He's familiar with all facets of media production and has worked on numerous Film, Television & Theater projects in New York, Florida & Denver for such clients as: United Artists; Hanna-Barbera; HBO; Turner Entertainment; AT&T; IBM; Putnam/Berkley and many others.
Since 1980, he's been a highly active participant in the Colorado Media Production Industry and is well-known as a vigorous ally of the Colorado Film Commission and the Denver International Film Festival. He's served as both President & Vice President of the Colorado Film/Video Association.
For decades, Mr. Flynn has been teaching Filmmaking and Voice Acting classes for the University of Colorado, Arvada Center for the Arts, Colorado Film School, Art Institute of Colorado and others.
Recently, he was the Screenwriter and one of the Producers on the Motion Picture "Set Apart" starring Richard Roundtree, (Shaft & Speed Racer) John Schneider, (Dukes of Hazzard & Smallville) and Jennifer O'Neill, (Rio Lobo & Summer of ‘42). “Set Apart” is a Sony Pictures/Provident Films release.

George Gray is a Colorado native and co-hosts the radio morning show “AM Colorado” on 1310 am KFKA. George is also a professional Elvis impersonator with a 16-member band and has performed in Las Vegas, Houston, TX, the South Padre Islands, and several large events throughout Colorado. Active in the local theater scene, he is the proud father of two beautiful daughters.

Jeffrey Forman has been a professional actor for over twenty years. He has worked in movies, television, theatre, commercials, print media, voice-over and promotional activities.

Jeff also has an extensive background in production. He has produced and directed theatre, television and exercise videos. His company, Lucky 7 Productions, LLC., owns the rights to several screenplays which are being marketed in Hollywood. He along with his partner Keith E. Renninson, own and operate Golden Years Videos, LLC., which produces exercise videos geared toward the senior market.

Jeff is a native of Colorado.

Brett is a Denver based voice over/on-camera actor who has done work for such clients as COORS, Starz/Encore, McDonalds, The US Navy, US Forest Service and the Denver Visitors Bureau. He has also been featured in 2 local independent feature films “Bacon Head” and “Strange Kind of Woman”. Currently Brett is part of the Zooch the Pooch animated series for children. Brett is also a musician with over 20 years of live and studio experience as well as producing his own Ambient/Space Music CD

Musician, scored the original soundtracks for "Storytime with Zooch"

CJ Lewis began his music career at the age of 3 on his grandmother’s knee.  He was privy to classical piano lessons in his youth, which only left him hungry for more.  After high school, he  broadened his horizons traveling to places both exotic and mundane,  and performing with many and various musical artists, from jazz to country to pop. These experiences all served as the fertile ground for his richly eclectic musical stylings today.

The lifelong pursuit is becoming a reality, Character Animator Rance Poole has always been "drawn to life" and to the wonderment of Traditional animation, as he animates Zooch and his friends and gives them life beyond the pages of books. The Graduate from CU Boulder's Fine Art department, with an emphasis in drawing and painting and a minor in graphic design; it wasn't until a television special on Walt Disney Animation that I realized just how powerful a drawing could be, and I became inspired, to learn as much as I could about this art form and all its endless wonders and possibilities. Zooch the Pooch is the first footprint in the sand and promises to be a memorable one.
Mark Derryberry

Mark Derryberry is an Award winning Audio Producer/Engineer. He has recorded numerous audio books for various publishers including Zondervon House, and Norton Books. Specializing in “Theater of the Mind” style audio books, Mark uses his experience in film sound and sweetening to enhance multi-actor recordings with sound effects and music. His extensive knowledge of Digital Audio Workstations and all formats of recording allow audio book producers to get very creative. He is President of Derryberry Audio Inc, a full service audio production facility in Metro Denver.

Mark immediately become interested in the project when he read the first script.
“The Pawsibilities’ crew is sensitive to the values we need to teach our children, to prepare them for today’s world. Simple concepts and messages children need, to overcome the violent and desensitizing nature of most media they are subjected to daily, presented in a very entertaining way.” We all understand the beauty of Audio books is that you still get to use your imagination! Mark has poured his heart into this project and hopes you enjoy every minute of it.

Jon began his filmmaking career as far back as the 1954 high school science fair where he pieced together a movie about the wild life of Yellow Stone National Park. Three years later he was making films for the U.S. Army while on active duty. In 1970 he came to Denver to pursue film production till the present day. His resume is loaded with animal and nature films.
The current animation series about Zooch the Pooch and the adventures with his family attest to Jon’s animal interests and his upbringing in small town Montana where dogs and family were ever present.

Keith spent 30+ years in the insurance and financial planning arena while quietly acting and doing voice-over work. He has authored or contributed to three books and many articles in multiple magazines and newspapers and online.  He co-authored the original "Zooch the Pooch" book with Michael Conrad Kelley.  Keith developed a passion for the “Zooch” project because of how it helps children to learn good habits, virtues and values.

Our application to be offered on iTunes has been processed and now we just wait until it shows up on the iTunes Store.  After we got on the iPad last year, I knew this day would come too.  We are very excited to add iTunes to the ways you can download our products to your desktop, laptop, iPhone, iPad, iPod and ultimately to a flash drive or CD.

Zooch’s philosophy is grounded in the theory that kids love to play and enjoy themselves, but they need to learn about the important things in life as they go, such as: learning to take responsibility for their actions, knowing what’s right from what’s wrong, being compassionate and understanding, listening to Dad and Mom advice, telling the truth, and many other core values.

"StoryTime with Zooch" is a play time/quiet time exercise and a subtle learning tool.  Combining our coloring books with a Zooch audio story will keep your little one entertained without watching TV; they can be creatively coloring while enjoying another exciting adventure of Zooch and his brother Hank.

We would encourage you to listen to the stories with your child because they will touch your heart too.
